Developmental Editing

Unlike copy-editing, which focuses on grammar and polish, developmental editing helps you see the big picture of your book: its structure, pacing, themes, and clarity of voice.

One-on-one coaching with Lee can provide some of this guidance during live sessions and in limited written feedback on your work-in-progress. Developmental editing encompasses a close reading and extensive written feedback on your entire manuscript.

As your developmental editor, Lee will read your entire manuscript to:

  • Clarify your book’s vision and goals
  • Strengthen your narrative arc or journey of transformation
  • Deepen characters, themes, or key ideas
  • Identify what’s missing, what’s in the wrong place, or what’s not serving your book
  • Provide constructive, specific feedback that builds confidence

What to Expect

You’ll receive a detailed editorial letter and margin notes on your manuscript, highlighting strengths as well as opportunities for revision. You may also schedule a follow-up call or coaching session to talk through next steps, depending on your needs.

Fees

If you’re ready to move your book forward, contact Lee about providing a sample of your manuscript, as well as about fees and timelines.

“Over many years, Lee has been my trusted editor and writing teacher. My second book, which received a 2015 Nautilus Award, benefitted hugely from Lee’s wise input.”— Mary Reynolds Thompson, author of Embrace Your Inner Wild, Reclaiming the Wild Soul, and The Way of the Wild Soul Woman.
